Niya Patel began her formal dance instruction in 2002 at North Springs High School Dance Magnet Program. There she received extensive training in a wide variety of dance genres including ballet, modern, jazz, lyrical, contemporary and West African. While in biology class in 2007, she met her current dance partner, a hip hop/salsa dancer named Allen Germaine, at Georgia State University. After one salsa outing, her interest in Latin dancing soared and she immediately began training with Allen in hip hop and the latin dance genres. Today, salsa is her passion. In 2008, she and Allen co-founded a group named Hipsalsa Dance Team, which performed choreographies merging salsa with hip hop. However, in 2009 the pair decided not to limit themselves to only two genres and dissolved the group, instead forming Proyecto Barrio Dance Company, in which they seek to fuse all classical dance genres with salsa.
